REBOL 2.1 Released: The Universal Scripting Language Now Spans 30 Platforms
Scripts run on all platforms without modification.
UKIAH, Calif. - June 30, 1999 - REBOL Technologies today announced REBOL 2.1, the latest release of the universal scripting language which runs on 30 widely-used operating system platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, and Windows CE.
"We're uniting the world of computing when so many others are pulling it apart," says Carl Sassenrath, CEO of REBOL Technologies (www.REBOL.com). "We are opening a new era of distributed computing by enabling every computer system to exchange and interpret the same information." REBOL is available for free download at the company's web site.
REBOL is for developers and administrators who need efficient solutions for dozens of day-to-day networking tasks, such as CGI serving, email processing, Internet searching, file transfer, newsgroup and automated web page retrieval. REBOL is easy to learn; users can become productive almost immediately. Among scripting languages, REBOL is uniquely human-centric and intuitive. Consequently, REBOL scripts are characteristically shorter and easier to write, maintain, deploy, and modify than scripts created in other languages. Says Sassenrath, "REBOL is quickly emerging as the de-facto standard for all those network communication tasks that web developers, programmers and system administrators deal with on a daily basis."
Unlike other languages, REBOL provides built-in networking support, eliminating the time-wasting task of calling and integrating different classes, modules and libraries into programs. Additional key features of the REBOL language include its compact size (150k on Windows), full platform independence, and built-in network support for common Internet protocols, such as CGI, HTTP, FTP, SMTP and more. New features in REBOL 2.1 include an XML parser, refined security such as sandbox directories, and new network features, such as direct access to NNTP.
"We're using REBOL to re-write our entire E-commerce suite of products. REBOL has proven to be a very efficient tool for performing a multitude of networking tasks, including development of transaction processing applications, registration utilities, and automatic template generation, just to name a few", said Brady Hiscox, Chief Software Developer at Payment Online, Inc.
